Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Coalition Spotlights Volunteers
Meet the MOCC Difference Makers
Every great mission is powered by people who share their time, talent, and heart to make a difference. In honor of National Volunteer Month, and in lieu of selecting just one volunteer of the year, we’re proud to spotlight four incredible women. Their dedication helps move the work of the Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Coalition forward every day.
Amanda, Danielle, Lisa, and Annie contribute in unique and meaningful ways. Their names may already sound familiar to many in our community—and two of them are even past Volunteer of the Year award recipients.
Amanda Laughlin: Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Survivor and Volunteer
Amanda brought her community together by organizing a race that energized supporters and raised money and awareness for our cause--not just once, but twice!
More recently, Amanda has taken on the role of patient voice in the selection process for Rhonda’s Award. It’s a position she’s uniquely qualified to fill. Not only is Amanda a Mucinous ovarian cancer survivor, she’s also a nurse practitioner for an OB/GYN practice. (Read about Amanda’s personal journewith Mucinous ovarian cancer here.) Thank you for all you do, Amanda. We appreciate you.
Danielle Duke: An MOCC Volunteer from Before Our Launch
Danielle works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our website updated and running smoothly. Her efforts help ensure that our community always has access to the latest information and resources. It’s a big job, especially on a budget-friendly platform that isn’t always easy to navigate.
Danielle has actually been with MOCC since before our official launch. A family friend of our co-founders’, Rhonda and Shelley, she built the MOCC website from the ground up.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our mission, Danielle.
Lisa Feinstein: Turning Grief Into Purpose
Lisa found her way to us as a grieving mother. Her daughter, Kate, had been diagnosed with Mucinous ovarian cancer at just 16 years old and passed away at the age of 19.
Like many people who experience profound loss, Lisa found purpose in honoring Kate’s memory. She organized a community walk in Kate’s honor and even worked with city leaders to have the day officially designated as Kate Kaplan Day. (Read Kate’s story here.)
Lisa continues to make an impact by connecting with women in the online mucinous ovarian cancer support group. Drawing on her experience as a caregiver and her background in science, she offers insight and encouragement to women recovering from surgery or undergoing treatment.
Thank you for sharing your time and compassion, Lisa.
Annie Tam Ngai: Raising Money in Her Sister’s Memory
We met Annie late in 2025 after her younger sister, Wendy, had exhausted all of her treatment options and transitioned to hospice care. On behalf of their family, Annie asked us to set up a memorial fund so Wendy could have peace of mind knowing her personal journey would make a difference.
After Wendy’s passing, Annie worked tirelessly to raise funds for research and help expand the impact of our annual grant. She also assisted in the lead-up to the call for abstracts for Rhonda’s Award, helping us identify researchers to personally invite to apply.
Thank you, Annie, for honoring your sister’s legacy in such a meaningful way.
MOCC is 100% Volunteer-Driven Organization
This month, we celebrate Amanda, Danielle, Lisa, and Annie for the time, care, and passion they share with our community.
But we also want to remind our supporters that MOCC is entirely volunteer-driven. Every person involved in our organization donates their time and talents to the fight against this rare and underfunded disease—and we are grateful to each and every one of them.
